Applying sustainable practices in operations:
SMEs Driving Climate Action Through Science-Based Targets

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital drivers of economic growth and job creation. Yet, limited resources, knowledge, and capacity often hinder their ability to embed sustainability into business operations.

One of the most impactful next steps for SMEs is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with climate science through science-based targets (SBTs). These targets not only future-proof business growth but also help cut costs, strengthen resilience to regulation, attract investors, drive innovation, and enhance brand reputation among increasingly conscious consumers. For SMEs in particular, SBTs can deliver rapid operational efficiency gains, such as reduced energy use and lower utility costs.

The good news is that momentum is already building. As of 23 July 2025, SMEs represent 38% (4,512) of all 11,904 companies with validated or committed SBTs, according to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In 2023 alone, 1,425 SMEs validated targets—more than the total from 2020 to 2022 combined—with 219 also committing to net zero. This upward trend signals a pivotal opportunity to accelerate SME climate action, building on the skills and readiness developed through SPARK.
